How early in the spring can the lawn be raked?
Once the snow is gone and the lawn surface is starting to dry, we can safely rake the lawn lightly with a leaf rake. Power raking should not be attempted until the lawn is dry.
How much do you charge for lawn care services?
Fees vary and are based on the size and complexity of the lawn.
Q: Why do I still get crabgrass in my lawn after applying a preemergent in the Spring?
Like any application made to the lawn, It is subject to weather conditions such as rain. Moisture can effect how long the preemergent is effective. If you apply a preemergent in early Spring and still have a problem in the Summer with crabgrass, it would be a good idea to make a second application about a month after the first to help control it. Even under the best circumstances, a preemergent is about 85% effective. If the thatch layer is more than 1/2″ deep power raking is beneficial for the lawn.
Can a lawn be seeded and fertilized at the same time?
Yes, but only if the level of fertilizer application is very low. If a normal application of fertilizer is applied it will tend to damage the germinating grass seeds. It’s usually best to fertilize, water well and then seed at a later date.In early spring, apply a fertilizer with a pre-emergent herbicide. About six to eight weeks later in late spring apply a fertilizer with a post-emergent herbicide. In late summer, apply a fertilizer with insect control. In early fall, apply fertilizer to stimulate root growth. In late fall, apply a winterizer fertilizer that builds resistance to the cold and provides nutrients to extend the green period in the fall and green up quicker in the spring.
What is aerating and does my lawn need it?
We recommend aeration every two years. Aerating will help a thin lawn by opening up the soil so root development is easier. It also helps a thick lawn open up and breathe. In either case, it allows our products to get to the root system and work better. We prefer to aerate at the same time as your third application. Ideally it is done during the rainy season so watering to “prep” the lawn isn’t necessary.First we must realize that a dry, dingy colored lawn as a result of drought conditions does not mean that the lawn is dying. Cool season lawn grasses simply go dormant during very stressful hot conditions. If a soil test has not been done in several years, this is a good place to start.
When should the lawn be fertilized?
Usually we recommend one application of fertilizer in the spring around Memorial Day and another in the fall about Labor Day. If your lawn is in poor condition you may want to make two applications in the fall.A nice green lawn is what makes us happy. We fertilize consistently, (included in the price of all our services), which keeps the lawns green through every season. In fact, we fertilize extra in the winter to keep your lawn from going dormant. Usually, we have the best looking lawns on the block and most of the neighbors say, “Hey, why is your lawn so green?” We don’t mind if you take the credit. This fungal disease occurs in cool, moist regions and is particularly common in western Washington. The disease develops rapidly during periods of high moisture and cool temperatures; fall through spring.
