We’ve all seen ads promising that we can use the Internet to make money. It’s tempting to accept this as true, but we all know that there are scams out there, and no such thing as easy money. So, how do we figure out which promises can actually come true and which are empty?

Welcome to the world of affiliate marketing. \”What is affiliate marketing?\” you may ask. The business model of affiliate marketing is not really all that new. In some sectors of business it’s called sales commission or revenue sharing. The idea has been around for centuries.

For example, imagine that a new health food store opens in your neighborhood. The owner offers you a dealshe will give you 10% of every sale to every customer who comes in and says that they were referred by you. If you do a good job of spreading the word to people who want health food, you can make good money. These affiliate marketing programs you’ve seen on the Internet use the same principle, except your neighborhood is the entire world.

Affiliate marketing is a genuinely lucrative market. Yes, you can work at home and earn really good money from the Internet. But don’t think that it’s a walk in the park. Nothing in life is that easy. The potential of an affiliate marketer is limitless but there is a price to pay for such potential.

There are some definite benefits to choosing Internet marketing for your home based business. Because you are helping to sell someone else’s products, you don’t actually have to buy and manage stock yourself. That saves you money, especially in the beginning, when you would otherwise have to shell out for product before you know whether it is going to sell.

Affiliate marketers enjoy freedoms that are not even thinkable in any regular job. No nagging boss, no commute and absolute freedom over their time. They work when and where they want to. I know affiliate marketers who work 10 hours a week and I know others who work 60 hours a week. How much you work is really just a matter of priorities. If you’re making enough to live on at 10 hours a week, I say have fun the rest of the time.

There are tradeoffs, however. You are on your own with affiliate marketing, with no regular salary or steady promise of employment. When you are first starting out, things can get rough, and if there is a downturn in the economy or a product stops selling, life gets interesting. There is a risk that you have to accept to gain independence, and not everyone wants that risk.

You also have to be very self motivated and it helps to be organized. You control your work schedule, but that also means that no one is going to make you work when you need to, but don’t want to. You will have to be resourceful, creative, and willing to keep at it when sales are slow, which will be especially true in the beginning. Stick with it though, and the rewards are well worth it.
