On days when I\’m in a good mood, I do better at the brain exercise; and on days when I do the brain exercise, it makes me feel happier and more relaxed. My fellow brain trainers report the same thing.

For some people, acrophobia or fear of heights is a significant stress trigger. While my wife is blissfully relaxed in cable cars and driving on high mountains, I become a quivering mess. My first awareness of this was driving up to a British hill station in north-eastern India. The 6000 feet climb caused me huge stress and I had to figure how high and I could relieve the stress

What causes you stress and how do you relieve stress? For me, it is fear of heights. I didn\’t realize I had acrophobia, which is a great fear of heights, until I was driving in north-eastern India some years ago. The memory came back to me recently in Juneau Alaska when my wife asked me to go on a cable car to the top of Mt Roberts. Both experiences induce stress and make me wonder how I can relieve stress.

Several years ago my wife and I were concerned that students who had significant reading disabilities might show undetected but high levels of stress. We were worried that no one seemed to have done any research on the impact of a reading disability on emotional well-being, specifically stress. We identified a cohort of fourth graders who had a serious reading disability and we measured their stress levels using a \’self-report\’ system, that is, a pencil and paper survey. We were delighted to find that at least in this sample of boys in this particular school that while the boys were significant underachievers in reading, their stress levels were normal and no stress relief program was necessary.

Every day we read in the newspapers sad accounts of the number of soldiers returning from Iraq who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Have you ever sat back and asked yourself what it would be like to win a whopping million dollar fortune? What would you do with the money? Would you help a lot of people or start a psychic business? Perhaps you would just retire and travel all over the world with the money. However, one man hated winning his fortune and tells all on an episode of 20/20 that aired on Friday April 6, 2007. Jack Whittaker was the man that won a Powerball lottery jackpot in 2002 for $315,000,000. That is more money than most people would ever make through the course of several lifetimes.
