There are a lot of different types of wood fence that you may see in the Boston area. For example, you’ll see a lot of cedar privacy fencing in suburban yards. However, in the city proper you’ll see smaller yards, more distinctive architecture and different types of fencing to mesh with these conditions. In Boston, you’ll see a little less fencing than you will in many other cities. Why? Well, while Boston has the fifth highest population density among major U.S. cities, it also is small in terms of land mass ? third smallest, in fact! However, the classic and timeless look which only a wood fence can achieve lends itself perfectly to this, a city with so much history that it’s there to be found around every corner.

If you want to put up wood fence on your property, you’ll have to decide on a fence design which suits your home and your property. In suburban Boston, you can put up really any kind of fence you want; though the stockade picket fence is the most popular. Also common in suburban areas is 6′ cedar privacy fencing. Both of these fences are more commonly seen with newer construction. Older colonial homes, on the other hand, are better suited by more traditional fencing ? as are newer homes which emulate their look.

In the city itself, fencing has more to do with the personal preferences of the homeowner. The brownstones seen in many neighborhoods often have low picket fences to delineate property lines while keeping the feeling of a tight knit community (a trademark of many Boston neighborhoods) intact. In backyard Boston wood fencing, though, you’ll see both the low picket fencing common to the front of homes as well as tall basketweave privacy fences which can create a private space even in the most densely populated of urban areas.

From the data we’ve gathered from homeowners who’ve located Boston wood fence builders to take care of their fencing needs, we can tell you about how much you can expect it to cost to have a wood fence built on your property. The cost for most of the wood fence installations done in the Boston area by contractors we work with is between $1,000 and $4,000 ? the average is about $2,500, including labor and materials. The time the job took averaged a pretty quick two weeks. The longest was four weeks and the quickest an astonishing eight days! Of course, the longer a job took, the more expensive it tended to be.

For homeowners in Greater Boston, what does all of this mean? It’s actually very good news. Since the prices are pretty consistent for wood fencing throughout the area, so as long as you can find a good contractor to build your wood fence and you know what you should be asking for, you’ll get a good fence for the cost. The wood you want used is cedar ? a wood which can stand up to the harsh winters and hot, humid summers of New England. Cedar naturally repels moisture, so it’s the perfect choice for a fence which needs to stand up to Nor’easters and offshore storms.

To keep your cedar fence looking good and performing well against weather, treat it every five to ten years. It’s well worth it for a fence which can take Boston’s sometimes tough climate. Other than cedar, pressure treated wood is your next best bet. If you want that fence to last for any length of time, though, be sure to paint it. Last, before committing to any contractor to build your wood fence, look into their track record. It might take a little work, but to get a fence which can stand up to a New England winter, it’s well worth it.
