The Yorkie is one of the dog breeds that have found its way into the heart of millions of people. This small and yet hardy dog is a fearless animal who is extremely loving and therefore would make a wonderful family pet.

Yorkies are generally not shy at all and take well to other people in the house and even to other animals. Living the pampered life is what Yorkies like to do best and whoever can offer this to them will be a friend forever.

This small dog, who only weighs in at about five or six pounds and is the perfect size to be carried around in a book bag or doggy purse. And they certainly do eat up that attention, as this dog’s personality is extremely outgoing and certainly loves to live the pampered life. Their lively spirit is a wonderful addition to just about any home as they are lovely but also independent at the same time.

Yorkies love to play and run around and with all kinds of play comes all kinds of cleaning in order to continue looking their best. The Yorkshire Terrier does require daily brushing in order to keep their coat in tiptop shape. Their long silky coat can quickly get out of hand if it is not properly taken care of. Also, they love their teeth being brushed, as this is even more attention focused on them.

Yorkies are also known for loving to run around the house or in circles at times, as they love their exercise. With all of this running around though, it is important that the Yorkies get the proper grooming that they need such as daily brushing of their long and silky coat. Without the daily brushing, their hair can get matted and end up a complete mess which will be hard to deal with. So by taking care of their coat on a regular basis, it will be so much easier.

As with any animal that has a great deal of independence in their system, Yorkies can be slightly difficult to housebreak but that is common for the breed. Now, they can be house broken but it just takes slightly longer then other types of small breed dogs. Also, make sure that your Yorkshire Terrier is wearing a sweater on rainy days, as they cannot stand the rain or any type of coldness.

Yorkies are also sometimes hard to house train as that independent personality tends to come out. They seem to have a mind of their own at times and this can get in the way of a quick training, but that is not to say that they are not trainable at all.

And in some cases, Yorkies have been known to bite children who unintentionally scared them out of their wits. This could be a very traumatizing experience for both the child and the Yorkie so it is best to just keep them apart.
