Given a choice I suspect that all of us would like to get married and live happily ever after. Unfortunately this isn’t always possible and marriages break down and end in divorce. Unfortunately for you if you are going through a divorce it is quite likely that the woman you shared your life and dreams with is now trying to get every cent she can out of you. Here are some tips that may help you avoid a bad Divorce settlement.
1. This may come as a shock but lawyers want to make as much money out of your divorce as possible, this is their business. If they can make the divorce stretch out over a long time they will because they will earn more money. Find a lawyer that has been recommended to you. But remember the lawyer who got cousin Bobby off of that DUI charge may not be the one who should be handling your divorce. Find a divorce specialist with a good reputation.
2. Make sure you find a good location to store all your personal and financial records. You should be the only one with access. Get yourself a new post box where you can have private mail sent to.
3. Cancel your credit cards and close all joint accounts you have with your wife.
4. This may sound like a strange one and it may be the last thing you want to do but keep some lines of communication open with your wife. It may that one day she contacts you and says “hey let’s get this over with quickly and get on with our lives… what do you want to settle quickly” Additionally small problems can quickly escalate to major problems if everything has to go through a lawyer.
5. If you have kids it’s important that you speak to them as often as possible. Reassure them that the divorce has nothing to do with them. Do everything to stop them feeling like they have been abandoned.
6. In court the written word is far more powerful that hearsay. Make sure that you keep all correspondence from your wife and her representatives. No matter how angry a letter makes you get don’t destroy it.
7. This one is a tough one! Don’t make negative comments about your wife to anyone. You never know who will tell a friend , who tells someone else and soon you get a lawyers letter telling you that you’ve been spreading rumors, and that my friend will cost you!.
8. Don’t be aggressive, remain calm. If your wife is an aggressive person, avoid getting into arguments with her.
9. Use friends and family for emotional support, you are not the first person to go through a divorce. This is when you find out who your real friends are.
Divorce can be a really horrible affair. There are many experts and lots of good advice available to you. Use this, search the internet for advice from people who know what they are talking about. There are several online products that can give you all the advice you need to ensure that you get what you want from the divorce not what your wife wants to give you.
