Because of soaring gas prices, many people with cars that run on unleaded fuel are looking for alternatives to lower their fuel expenses. One option is to choose cars with diesel engines. With diesel-engine cars, drivers are able to save more money because of the lower costs of diesel fuel.
How was the diesel engine invented? It was invented by Rudolf Diesel, who was born in Paris to Bavarian immigrants. He graduated from Munich Polytechnic and worked as an engineer. On February 27, 1892, he filed for a patent that covered the design of the internal combustion engine that he designed. The patent was granted within a year. His patent was also granted in 1898 in the United States.
Since then, more improvements have been made in the technology of diesel engines. In the 1920s, an innovative design for an injection pump was invented by Robert Bosch. The high demand for his invention prompted Bosch to make business with various companies in different countries all over the world to manufacture his injection pumps.
Because of their excellent efficiency, demand for diesel engines continued to rise. New developments were made in terms of the engine’s technology, and it was used in a wider variety of applications. On January 6, 1930, the first road trip using a diesel-engine car was completed. The trip covered about 1300 kilometers, which showed everyone the limitless applications of diesel engines. The fuel also found its way into the car racing world. In 1931, in the Cummins Diesel Special, a diesel-engine car finished the Indy 500 without ever needing a pit stop. That was the first time in history that such a thing occurred.
Today, diesel engines drive the production processes in many industries. They can be found everywhere, in ships, cars, trains, and other machines. Diesel is also cheaper than unleaded fuel, which is why these days, with the rapidly increasing fuel prices, more and more people are turning to diesel engines.
